Then understudy Benji Roy, substituting for the benched Porter, won a nomination for best performance in a supporting role. With the decibel level in the Winchester gymnasium threatening to go off the meter, he connected on a free throw to give Rappahannock a 70-67 edge. But the dramatics weren’t over yet: at the other end of the court, Dysart hit a pair from the line to cut it to 7069.
The clock now said 30 seconds. The Falcons mounted an aggressive press, but they couldn’t stop the Panthers from getting the ball inbounds. Rappahannock’s attempt to run off some time failed, however, when the scoreboard went blank. Play resumed after the power was restored and again Rappahannock had to fight the Falcon press to get the ball inbounds.
A foul put Dunp on the line. He missed the front end of a one-andone, but a Central player stepped out of bounds on their offensive possession, giving the ball back to the Panthers.
The clock said seven seconds. Doug Smith’s attempt missed and Central had time for one last desperation shot which fell short, and the Panthers survived, 70-69.
