Historical Society meeting
The Rappahannock County Historical Society will hold its quarterly business'meeting Friday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock County courthouse. There will be election of officers, and an interesting program is planned for the evening. »
'Springtime Fantasies'
The Rappahannock Women’s Club will have their annual fashion show on Sunday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at the Rappahannock County Elementary School. This year’s show, “Springtime Fantasies” will feature fashions from Frank’s and Warren Quality in Front Royal, Jack & Jill in Culpeper, as well as fashions from Country Manor and The Faith Mountain Company in Sperryville. Proceeds from the event will go to the annual scholarship for a Rappahannock County High School graduating senior and the Rappahannock Library. Advance tickets are available from any member of the club or at the Rappahannock News on Main Street in Culpeper. County Beautification Day
The Rappahannock Anti-Litter League and You (RALLY) will sponsor its annual County Beautification Day on Saturday, April 1. Planned “as a cleanup of the most litter-strewn areas of the county, RALLY is encouraging the participation of as many of the county's residents as possible. T-shirts and refreshments will be provided for all. The rain date is the following Saturday, April 8. Ladies' Auxiliary to meet
The Flint Hill Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary will meet Monday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the fire hall. Their annual banquet will be the main topic of discussion. All members are urged to attend this important meeting.
'Running on Empty'
The movie Running on Empty will be playing at the Gay Street Theater on Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. The movie stars Christine Lahti, Judd Hirsh, River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton. Annie and Arthur Pope (Lahti and Hirsh) are former radicals who’ve been living underground. What’s most fascinating about this movie is how it combines its background subject of’60s politics .with its real, and very ’80s subject, the nuclear family. The true hero is the Popes’ bright 17-year-old, Danny (Phoenix), who has to cope with his childhood, moving from town to town, school to school, picking up a new' identity ever six months. Two events bring on the family crisis: Danny falls in love for the first time, and, being a gifted pianist, he is offered a scholarship. How can he desert his adoring parents knowing that they w-on’t be able to meet if he comes up from underground? It’s the radicals, his parents, who find themselves in the ideologically uncomfortable position of blocking their son’s freedom. Directed by Sidney Lumet with artful simplicity. The movie is rated PG-13. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
