Training for judges
The Area 9 Extension Home Economists are conducting a Fair Judges Training on April 5 at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center. The cost is $6.50 and includes lunch and breaks. Registration is due March 24,-Call the Extension Office at 675-3619 for a schedule and description of the classes and registration.
Creative drama for children
Two drama classes for children will be offered by RAAC and the Golden Key Performance Group on Mondays for six weeks from March 6 to April 10. The RAAC-sponsored class will be taught by Laurie Marshall at the Gay Street Theater for children ages 5-8. It will meet from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and costs $30. Call 675-3267 to register. Golden Key’s class will be taught by Cathy Kiley at Washington’s Town Hall for young people ages 9-18. It will meet from 3:30-6:00 p.m. and costs $40. Call 987-3106 to register. Both classes will involve improvisation, theater games and movement. Kiley’s class will also emphasize family stories, myths and folklore. Financial aid is available for both classes.
Art and craft bazaar
Salem Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad will sponsor its first art and craft bazaar on Saturday, May 13 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the fire hall in Griffinsburg, Route 522. The organization is seeking crafters. Anyone interested should contact Dorothy Beck at 547-3957. Deadline for reservation is May 1.
Library poetry program offered
A large-screen video program and lively audience discussion will be held Tuesday, March 7 about the most influential poet of his generation, T.S. Eliot, at 7 p.m. in the new auditorium of the Rappahannock County High School. Film footage from St. Louis, Boston, London and France follows Eliot’s career from the bold originality of “J. Alfred Prufock” to the probing style of his “Four Quartets.” Sponsored by the Rappahannock County Library and made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association, this program is one of a series on “Making it New — the Origins of Modern Poetry” on 20th-century poets which the library is offering every other Tuesday through April 11. The other poets in the series are Langston Hughes on March 21, Elizabeth Bishop on April 4, and Sylvia Plath on April 11. There is no charge for the program. The Washington Masonic Lodge .78 AF&AM will meet in its lodge hall on Monday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. All Master Masons are invited.
Trash into art
The Middle Street Gallery and the Child Care and Learning Center will sponsor a family art workshop, using recyclable garbage. It will be held on Saturday, March 18 from 10 a m. to 2 p.m. at CCLC. Artist Laurie Marshall will supply technical assistance, participants are urged to BYOT (bring your own trash). The cost is $5 per child $10 per adult, with a maximum of $15 per family. Children may submit their creations to the Recycled Art Contest, and adults may exhibit their works at the gallery’s Recycled Art Show. For information or to register, call 675-3267 or 675-3810. ’
