Each piece begins with light melodies to please the shallow spirit. The music then reflects the suffering that complicates the winning of each stage of love and joy, finally reflecting tension and release, ending with a serene character.
Persian musicians note that the chronic anguish and joyous passion found in their music mirror the condition of people that has survived invasion and occupation by hostile powers.
Many times, Islamic forces have tried to suppress traditional music. Other Islamic leaders have encouraged the mysticism that the music and the religion share.
Visitors to the Gay Street Theater on March 10 will have a rare opportunity to witness a committed and internationally-acclaimed artist, displaced from his homeland but committed to preserving the music of his beleaguered people.
