rather than have their heirs have to pay it,” a spokesman in the Warren County Commissioner of Revenue's office reported.
For those above 75 years of age, Warren County has a tax exempt program. The income limitation for this program rises to the $22,000 allowed by state-enabling legislation, and the eligible owner can be exempt from any percentage of taxes he or she requests up to 100 percent.
In addition, there is a crossover program for those who have been in the tax deferral program which allows them to switch to the exemption program when they reach age 75. The exemption program forgives a percentage of the deferred taxes, so that an owner who lives to age 80 will never have to pay back deferred taxes.
Rappahannock residents are encouraged to attend the public hearing on March 6 to let their supervisors know which, if any, of these programs they would like to see adopted here.
