gratitude is evidenced when we in turn love God and neighbor. We begin to imitate God.
God’s supreme gift, the ultimate expression of love, was God’s becoming one of us on the first Christmas. This Incarnation restored to us our dignity as creatures after God’s image. The pre-existent Christ emptied himself to become the poorest among us. He laid aside the glory that he shared with his Father before the world began. The Rich became poor in order that through his sacrificial death we, the poor might share his wealth, the true riches.
But a gift is not ours until we receive it. The air is ours only because we breathe it, the water because we drink it. God’s gift awaits only our acceptance. This we call ’’grace." We can have God on no other terms. But don't we receive our loved ones at Christmas on the same terms? We who so generously give at this time of year, can we not also receive God's gift of eternal life?
