devil (with whom I was already fairly well acquainted through instruction and hearsay). He was digging up from under me as I was playing alone in a sandpile with my present from Santa Claus—a toy dump truck. When my mother and Aunt Jenny ran from the house in response to my screams that the devil was coming they found a tiny filack mole staring blindly up at them from the sand! Their reassurances were useless; the animal had come from the devil’s home, he had come for me, and I already knew that he could turn himself into a snake or into anything else that he chose, so why not into this little fairy animal? Besides, it was the first time I had ever seen a mole.

The devil’s attempt to kidnap me that Christmas was just the beginning; things continued to get worse, Christmas by Christmas.

When I was about five, my older brother completely demolished my brand-new, sturdy, steel “steam shovel,” on which I could ride, a present from Santa. Connie blew it apart by placing inside it a “cherry bomb,” meaning to blow it apart by air as he had the tin cans. Instead, he managed to flatten it with a terrific explosion on Christmas morning.
