“People like to feel they have something that ties them to the community,” he said of his scenic designs, which characterize each of the county’s villages. “Not just people who live here, but those who visit.”
A great deal of thought and personality goes into each design. Mr. FitzSimons said he spent several fruitless hours in the library looking for a picture of Washington as a young man before he resorted to using Washington’s well-known pose. After several sketches, his design was ready to be sent for screen production.
The screen is then returned to the FitzSimons shop, where it is attached to their screen-printing machine.
T-shirts, sweatshirts, totes and other items are ordered from distributors.
The shirt - either 100 percent cotton or a 50-50 cotton-polyester blend - is stretched and centered on a wooden form; the screen is lowered into position over it; with a squeeze, ink is distributed evenly over the shirt; the screen is raised and the printed heated for 45 to 75 seconds with the infrared light.
“You have to be very careful not to scorch the fabric,” Lois said, explaining the process. If more than one color is used, the process is repeated; the top of the printer is rotated so another screen is in position above the shirt.
