Though Mr. Wingfield characteristically declined to make a prediction for the remainder of the winter, he said that Bob Ryan, the meterologist on Washington, D.C.’s Channel 4, cited statistics that show 70 percent of unusually cold Decembers are followed by unusually cold Januarys but warmer than normal Februarys.
In other words, he said, “maybe” we can look forward to an early spring. But, he cautioned, “if we hope too myeh for that, we may end up with one of the 30 percent that isn’t warmer!”
Despite the NWS predictions, Mr. Wingfield’s characteristic optimism leaves him looking for the bright side in all this odd weather. When he was making his observations in his backyard several evenings ago, he related, he listened to the happy laughter and cries of neighborhood children playing in the snow. “I thought to myself, ‘I haven’t heard that in a long time’. As the man at the Exxon said, it’s an old-fashioned winter, so get out the mincemeat pies and all that stuff.”
