hit upon one answer: the devil and his helpers hated the Baby Jesus and Santa Claus and wanted to spoil everything for them. I was just getting caught in the crossfire!

I did not think it prudent to try hard to remember one or two, or maybe three small sins of my own to explain things. I haven’t had much reason in the intervening years to change the conclusion at which I arrived that day.

For all of my life, from 1921 to date, the world has been going to hell in a basket; nothing but “wars and rumors of war”: the aftermath of the Great War (WWI); the Russian Revolution and its aftermath; the rise of the fascist dictatorships; the headlong rush of the whole world into the second World War; our development of the atomic bomb and its use in war; the enslavement of one country after another and, then, almost a half century of cold war between the communists and the west.

And then, suddenly, the collapse of the whole communist house of cards and lies. Surprise! Surprise!
