The low readings continue a short-term trend, Mr. Wingfield observed, since last year’s temperatures in December were colder than in 1987, and this year is still colder than last. In fact, the average low for the month so far is a frigid 16 degrees.
Along with the freezing temperatures, high winds last weekend made the cold even more unbearable. Mr. Wingfield's anemometer registered wind gusts of 40 miles per hour last Friday, and speeds reached 42 miles per hour -the next day. That produced a wind chill factor (the actual perceived air temperature) of well below zero.
The culprit in all this unseasonably cold weather, Mr. Wingfield said, is the jet stream. It has tenaciously clung to a flow pattern which funnels Arctic air from Canada down through the Mid-Atlantic states, and there’s no change in sight.
In fact, the National Weather Service’s long-range forecast is for high temperatures in the teens by the weekend, with the lows dipping perhaps below zero. “After today (Wednesday), through the weekend
