SSI program

If you have limited income and resources, supplemental security income (SSI) may be able to help, according to Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper.
SSI is a Federal program administered by the Social Security Administration but financed from general revenues, not from Social Security taxes, Mr. Hundley explained. It makes monthly payments to eligible aged, blind and disabled people. People who receive SSI may qualify for other benefits too, such as Medicaid, food stamps and other social services.
You may qualify if you are 65 or older, or blind or disabled, and a lawful resident of the U.S., and you meet certain income and resource limits, Mr. Hundley said. Some income and some resources are not counted in determining eligibility for SSI. The house you live in and your car, for example, are not counted in the resource limit.
