Throughout my lifetime, Santa Claus has been fighting a losing battle to keep alive the Christmas spirit and to hold us steadfast in our faith.
Until very recently the older people kept this dark secret to themselves and bravely fried to pretend to me and other children between one and 68 years of age that all was well.
Behind the Iron Curtain, children quite often did not see Santa Claus and they were taught that the Baby Jesus had never existed. But little children know what is true and what is not true. No teacher is clever ^ enough and no so-called state” is strong enough to pervert their hearts permanently, for “of such is the Kingdom of God.”
A bell rings and a child is reminded by its sweet tones of angels, of the Baby Jesus, of Heaven; the child grows older and the bell’s sonorous tones remind him of freedom and happiness again. :* This Christmas these bells are pealing out all over Europe in joyful unison, proclaiming, “God is not dead. Christ was bom this day and still is alive. We shall soon be completely free. Up with the cross as our symbol and down with all walls!”
