Dr. Gangel explained that the new remedial-reading teacher is interested in getting trained for “reading recovery,” but he had been unable to get her the needed training. “Fairfax County has a trainer, but they are servicing their own people first,” he said.
Dr. Gangel said he contacted State Superintendent of Education Jack Davis “and indicated my frustration. He came through.” Dr. Gangel said that Dr. Davis had promised $25,000 per year for the next two years to train people for the program. Twenty-two teachers per year will get the training, and Rappahannock will get one slot.
Henrico County will act as fiscal agent for the program, which will be coordinated with the University of Richmond, the superintendent explained. The teacher will attend training once a week for a year. Dr. Gangel said the training will cost the county $5,000, and he asked the School Board to adopt a resolution in support of Henrico County’s efforts to get the program. The board willingly did so.
