One of the problems the School Board faced at its meeting appears to have a solution. Dr. Gangel reported that he had been trying to get a “reading recovery” program introduced at the elementary school. This program requires a trained teacher to work one-on-one with students who are having trouble with reading in first grade, for a half-hour a day, for 12 to 16 weeks.
“With one student to one teacher, it seems expensive,” he said. “But 75 percent stay on grade level. It is cost effective,” he said, because is eliminates the need for future remediation.
