According to assistant superintendent Robert Chappell, who serves as the schools’ asbestos coordinator, the EPA is concerned that stripping wax from the tiles could release asbestos fibers into the air, where they could be breathed by students and faculty. Inhalation of asbestos dust and fibers has been linked to lung cancer.
