A year ago, we were given little hope that Shirley Minton would survive brain surgery three times in 10 days. The neurosurgeons call her amazing. We call her a walking miracle.
She operates the “No-Kill Cat Shelter Inc.” at Route 5, Box 300, Abingdon, VA 24210. The unfunded, non-profit home for handicapped and unwanted cats and kittens now has between 175 to 200 residents.
During her"8VS* years of taking in strays, Shirley has overcome the effects of a fire, a theft, cataracts, eye surgery twice, open-heart surgery to implant an artificial heart valve and brain surgery three times.
Shirley is doing well, but the brain surgeries robbed her of much of her manual dexterity needed to make the detailed crafts which were her only way of supporting the cats. She is not bitter. She lives with an optimistic faith that there will, somehow, be a way to keep the shelter operating.
