school is let out early, parents who work would have no way to meet the bus on its return route in the afternoon to pick up the children, and they would either have to stay somewhere else or walk home.
(Without a safe, protected location for the children to gather, Dr. Gangel indicated, the limited-busroute option is not one he favors.)
“They [Warren County} don’t even get all the hard-surfaced roads plowed,” Mr. Oliver said.
“I can’t see risking the life of one child by sending the buses out,” School Board Chairwoman Beverly Massie said.
The board learned that the two new diesel buses have been received and are being used. Dr. Gangel said they hadn’t been used long enough to show that they were getting better mileage than the gasoline buses, but he felt sure he would be able to show that, after they have been used for a full reporting period.
He added that the drivers have had no trouble starting them in cold weather, but that they don’t warm up as fast as the gasoline buses, and they run somewhat louder. The drivers have had no major problems with them but complain that they are “not
