The Rappahannock County school system has responded to recent media reports about the possible danger of using stripping machines to remove wax from tile floors that contain asbestos.
Assistant superintendent Robert Chappell reports that the custodians normally remove all wax from floors during summer months, but he has notified employees to immediately discontinue use of stripping machines and buffers until further notice.
“We have been in touch with the state’s office of Energies and Facili-' ties Services. They have advised us not to use these machines until they send us revised guidelines for their use,” he said.
Chappell, who is licensed by the state as an asbestos supervisor, is responsible for overseeing the schools’ “Asbestos Management Plan,” which was approved by the state during the 1988-89 school year. “We take seriously our responsibilities in this and other matters involving safety. Our primary objective is the safety of our students and employees.”
