The average adult book costs $19. Replacing lost and missing books drains the library’s budget. But the problem reaches beyond cost. Often, overdue books are new titles other people are waiting to read, or books on loan from lending libraries in other parts of the state.

The longer these books are kept past due date, the more paperwork is generated to track them and insure their safe return. Paperwork ties up the library staff: pulling them away from other jobs needing to be done.

Library fines pay only a fraction of the cost of mailing overdue notices, reordering and reprocessing lost books. The library would much rather have the books back in good conditidn.
