The Rappahannock Panthers volleyball team wasted no time in showing their Bull Run District rivals that they are a force to be reckoned with this season, finishing second in the Manassas Park Tip-Off Tournament.
However, after snow forced the postponement of the team’s next two scheduled games, the Panthers lost in their next two outings Dec. 18 and 19, against Strasburg on the road and against Page at home.
Coach Scott Mellott said the team played “like they lacked confidence.” He attributed much of their difficulties to the five days of school missed this month, which also cancelled after-school practices.
The news was better from the Tip-Off Tournament, however, as the Panthers defeated their first two opponents, Brentsville District and Manassas Park. Against Brentsville, they dropped the first game 15-4, then rallied to take the second game 15-13 and were leading 2-1 in the third game when the 45-minute match time limit ran out.
Rappahannock dominated the second contest against Manassas Park, blanking the Cougars 15-0 in the first game and commanding the second game, 15-7.
George Mason, however, proved too tough for the Panthers. The Mustangs defeated Rappahannock in two games, 15-11 and 15-2. George Mason took top honors in the tournament with an undefeated record, 3
