Town subdivision
wins approval

After a long and sometimes fractious debate, Washington’s Town Council approved the subdivision of the former Stuart property on Blue Ridge Avenue.
The approval was granted despite the town Planning Commission’s recommendation that the subdivision be rejected on the grounds that promised documentation had not been provided.
By last Wednesday evening, however, those documents were submitted by the LOMP joint venture partners, who are Dean and Linda Morehouse, Robert and Susan Parrish, Patrick O’Connell and Reinhardt Lynch.
The debate over approval of the subdivision centered qn differing interpretations of the town’s subdivision ordinance. Planning Commission chairman William Wickens maintained that the ordinance mandated that all septic systems be located on the lot which they serve, which is not the case on two of the LOMP lots.
Councilman Ray Gooch, however, argued that the council was within its rights to waive that provision under another section of the subdivision ordinance.
Wickens also argued that the partners’ failure to dedicate the land necessary to fulfill another requirement, that all roads serving subdivisions be on 50-foot rights-of-way, was also grounds for denial of the subdivision application.
Gooch again argued that the council was within its rights to waive that provision as well.
