“In 1976 I was more in the tradition of the party than Jimmy Carter. I thought Carter was a disaster. He lost control of foreign policy and the Pentagon. Inflation was 13 percent. He was not even able to get SALT II through. I thought Reagan could do something about nuclear disarmament."

Mr. McCarthy said he feels current moves toward nuclear disarmament are due to Reagan and the Iceland summit, when for the first time a goal of not merely freezing nuclear weapons at some future level but reducing them was announced.
