A major contributor to Mr. Wood’s success was his early start, Darby campaign manager Jeff Parker said Tuesday. Mr. Wood started campaigning about three months ahead of Mr. Darby and his campaign signs and literature were long a fixture by county roads and in business windows before those of Mr. Darby. He also raised considerably more money than did Mr. Darby.
Mr. Darby’s strength in Warren County was generally attributed to the presence of an established Republican organization there that has supported Del. Raymond R. “Andy” Guest in past campaigns for the 31st District seat.
He also had strong showings in conservative northern Fauquier and in the areas east of Warrenton. Mr. Wood won all 14 Fauquier precincts, but had the greatest margins in southern Fauquier and in the town of Warrenton.
