Seventy percent of the 3,355 registered voters cast ballots, for a total of 2,360 voters participating this year. There was some confusion at the Scrabble and Sperryville precincts early in the day, as some of the voters who were supposed to cast ballots in new Virginia Senate districts were instead given ballots for their old districts. An undetermined, but certainly small, number of voters cast incorrect ballots before Mrs. Leake called down to the State Registrar in Richmond and got the problem straightened out. She said between 22 and 26 voters voted in the wrong district. Because of the margin of victory for Mr. Robb and Sen. Miller, the mix-up is not expected to throw their elections into doubt. The confusion came about because the General Assembly used the county’s old supervisor districts when redrawing lines this summer following the 1990 Census. Until an amendment is passed to correct the discrepancies, which occurred across the state, both Sperryville and Scrabble are split between the 25th and 26th districts. However, early in the day all voters in Sperryville were casting ballots in the HaynesMiller contest and all Scrabble voters were casting Robb-Michie ballots.
Mrs. Leake said Wednesday morning that she was awaiting word from Richmond about the status of the voters who cast incorrect ballots.
