particular strength in southern and central Fauquier. Mr. Darby, a retired businessman who lives in Woodville, won Rappahannock by a 1,128-1,053 margin, and swept Warren County, with about 500 more votes than Mr. Wood.
“I made up a lot of ground, clearly I didn’t make up enough,” said Mr. Darby late Tuesday night. “My thanks to my supporters— there were a lot of people involved.”
Albert Pollard, Mr. Wood’s campaign manager, said that Mr. Wood’s support came from a “combination of friends and neighbors and issues votes.”
Mr. Wood said that being a Democrat in a traditionally Republican area was not a problem in his race. “We talked about the issues. People respect you for knowing your position,” he said.
