Several major landowners in Rappahannock have closed their land to hunters. Hunting season for rifles is scheduled to begin Nov. 18.

According to Sperryville attorney Bill Fletcher, farms closed to hunting include Thornton Hill, Montpelier, Mount Vernon Stock Farm, the Shade, and Pleasant View.

The Rappahannock Hunt has postponed fox hunting indefinitely as well.

Also this week:

• The Saturday night Masquerade Ball at the Washington Fire Hall went off without a hitch, according to Rappahannock Sheriff John H. Woodward. Procedures for holding dances were altered last month after a series of fights broke out inside and outside the fire hall during and after a dance. Felony charges were filed after one man was hospitalized.

But the last two dances have been peaceful, and Sheriff Woodward said he was satisfied with the new procedures.

“If they go like it did Saturday they can continue as far as I’m concerned,” he said.
