As a homeschooling “mom/teacher" I’m used to explaining my lifestyle, so please allow me to once again describe the events that led to our decision to learn formally at home.
Britton Wood is a normal, funloving eight-year-old who began kindergarten three years ago with an eager attitude. He jumped off the bus that first afternoon, shouting, “I love it!” It was only as the weeks went by in his class of 30 children, that he began to tire of the barrage of worksheets. He always liked his teacher, and even though her philosophy of teaching was different from mine, I completely sympathized with her as she faced the daunting task of working with so huge and varied a group.
I volunteered one day a week to help a child in Britton’s class who was learning English as a second language—hoping that this would free his teacher to provide more interesting work for Britton. The situation did not improve and Britton was becoming more unhappy. Finally we decided to teach Britton at home after the Christmas break.
We’ve been a homeschooling family ever since. We enjoy learning without worksheets or a rigid schedule defined by bells or groups of students coming and going to remedial labs. We love having our children with us for that big seven hour
