Del. Allen is widely viewed as a rising star in state GOP politics, and had been considered a favorite to win the Attorney General’s Office next year before Rep. Slaughter’s announcement this summer that he was retiring due to ill health.
Del. Allen was a major organizer of Rep. Slaughter’s re-election campaign last year over Democratic challenger David Smith of Winchester.
Del. Allen forced Rep. Slaughter’s son, D. French Slaughter III, out of the race early for the GOP nomination. Rep. Slaughter strongly endorsed Del. Allen, helping counter confusion among voters about the fact that Kay Slaughter and he are cousins.
Del. Allen was able to raise about half-again the amount that Ms. Slaughter was over the course of the campaign, spending it most recently on attack ads.
He will be up for re-election next fall, following the congressional redistricting, under which the 7th District is almost certain to be changed considerably.
The 7th District election might be over, but the ads that Del. Allen used against Ms. Slaughter are harbingers of the GOP’s message to come.
