Mr. McCarthy offered one piece of good news to partially counter the news on the LCI. He said that Del. Richard Cranwell had offered to introduce legislation in the next session of the General Assembly to allow localities to charge impact fees to help pay for new school construction.
Mr. McCarthy said Del. Cranwell had indicated he would introduce such legislation if enough localities indicated they would support such a bill.
The supervisors adopted a resolution supporting impact fees for school construction on a local option basis.
The supervisors considered tax relief for the elderly. Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke explained that they could either exempt or defer a portion of taxes due for homeowners who are 65 or older and whose household income is less that $30,000 and whose net worth, excluding a house and one acre is $75,000 or less.
