He is a native of Highland Park, 111., a suburb of Chicago. He entered Amherst College in 1941 and two years later was appointed to the Naval Academy. Following graduation and a year at sea Adm. Turner entered Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. At Oxford he earned a master’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics.
More recently, in 1989-90, Adm. Turner was the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of National Security at West Point. This year he joined the faculty of the School of Public Affairs at the University of Maryland as the John M. Olin Professor.
He makes his home in McLean but stays at his weekend home in Castleton as often as his busy schedale allows.
