Charlottesville runner Rich Ferguson was first to break the tape at the Fodders tack 10-K Classic Saturday, beating a field of 206 runners on the Flint Hill-to-Washington course with a time of 33:16.
Ferguson said a light rain that fell may have worked to his advantage, but the steep course did not. “It was hilly, and it’s hard running by yourself on a hilly course. . . . The rain probably helped, if anything—it cooled things off.”
The win came in his first attempt at the Fodderstack course; his main event is the marathon. Ferguson finished 13th overall in the Boston Marathon in 1984 and attended the Olympic trials in 1984 and 1988, he said. He underwent hamstring surgery in November, which has inhibited his ability to train, but he still logs about 100 miles a week.
