Eleven of the 14 entries went to the post, with the usual casualties beginning early as Frederick M. Warburg’s Mountsville lost his rider at the second fence. Blockade, Charles E. Tuttle’s three-time winner of the Maryland Hunt Cup and considered a likely victor in the Gold Cup, died of a probable heart attack at the 17th fence. He was running a close second when he fell and never moved again.
Sir Romeo set the pace from the fourth fence and was never headed, finishing in the good time of 7:35 for the stiff four-mile course.
