Like clockwork, the first weekend in May brings the running of the prestigious Virginia Gold Cup. The day at the lush Great Meadow course offers more than just spectacular thoroughbreds galloping at breakneck speed over challenging courses, tailgating and socializing. Special events and pageantry surround the classic day of racing.
The 67th running of the Virginia Gold Cup on May 2 begins for spectators at 10 a.m. when the gates open. At 10:20 a.m., the U.S. Mounted Police Parade will demonstrate the skills needed by both horse and rider for crowd control and policing of the nation's parks. The Park Police will actually help with the crowds at Great Meadow throughout the day.
