up, and finished the season as the Midwest timber champion. This season he has won five of his six starts, losing by a nose to his stablemate at Oxmoor. Paul Sloan, lawyer and family friend, has been his only race rider.
It was the largest Gold Cup in many years, and the largest timber race this year with nine starters. They made for a leisurely beginning for the long gallop over 23 fences with Art Dom and Pidou II leading. Both had competed recently in fourmile races —the Maryland Hunt Cup and Oatland's Eustis Cup respectively.
Then Hoolee went to the front temporarily, but Art Dom passed him and kept the lead for the next three miles. Former owner Randy Waterman pulled up Pidou after the seventh, and Old Ralph and Prayful Rullah were also pulled up.
Prince Saran outjumped Hoolee at the fence in front of the officials' stand to be second. Then at the second last fence he leaped to the lead over Art Dom and couldn’t be caught, winning by four lengths.
Mrs. Elizabeth Todd's Art Dom, ridden by John Bosley, was second by a distance over local owner Roy Graham's Man of Rhythm, Don Yovanovich riding.
