For horses and riders not of the stuff to contest the four miles and 23 fences of the Gold Cup race itself, there are six other choices on the card. Stakes horses preferring to run over the national hurdles can take a chance in the $40,000 Continental Cup.
The finale at the Gold Cup meeting will be an optional claimer over brush. Horses en tered in this race are either nonwinners of two races over hurdles, or are entered to be claimed for $15,000, regardless of'previous earnings. A ‘claim’ may be placed on any horse entered for that price. The person presents a certified check for that amount to officials before the start of the race. The runner is then the property of the person placing the claim at the finish of the race — win, lose or draw.
Non-winners over timber are invited to run in the first race of the day. The maiden timber race will run 3'/4-miles over 17 timber jumps. There is proof positive of the ability of maiden winners from past meetings at The Plains — in 1990, Joe’s OK won this contest, beating Pleasant Sea (who has gone on to win multiple timber races) and Song Of Songs (Joe Rogers’ Chilean-bred timber topper, a winner of many jump races.) Joe’s OK went on to win the 1990 International Gold Cup here and the 1991 Virginia Gold Cup.
