Opening the day of hurdle and timber races at the Gold Cup will be the ever-anticipated pony flat races. Post time for the two heats will be 11:15 a.m., with paddock time scheduled for 11 a.m. Spectators are encouraged to peruse the entrants carefully in the saddling enclosure, choosing a favorite from amongst the tiny runners.
“This is not only a way of racing ponies, it is also a way of propping riders to become professional and polished as they approach horse racing,” said pony race organizer, Jim Lawrence of Marshall. “Many of the riders you see racing here today in the horse races — Dawn Dugan, Chuck Lawrence, Charlie Fenwick III, the DeMichele boys (Peter and David), Patrick Worrell. They all came up through the pony racing ranks.”
Lawrence also pointed out that many top race riders-tumedtrainers — Bemie Houghton, Ricky Hendriks and Speedy Smithwick — also raced ponies long before racing horses.
“By being competitive and racing in these pony races, riders are put about five years ahead of the game when they get their NSHA license or flat license,” Lawrence added.
