Welch then fell behind the next hitter 3-0, and another ball would have lost the game. He fought back to a full count, then watched as the Page batter flied out to left field to end the inning.
It was still light enough for Rappahannock to bat, but Page would not have had a chance at the plate in the eighth, so the umpire called the game.
Against Manassas Park April 24, Rappahannock gave up two home runs and failed to mount much of an offense, losing 4-1. The tie and the loss left the Panthers’ record at 3-61, still in contention for a playoff spot going into the last couple of weeks of Bull Run District play.
Statistical leaders through the Manassas Park game: Kevin Jolliffe, .267 average, 8-for-30; Justin Ferrence, .257, 2-for-3 against MP; and Kevin Daymude, .250 average, 10 RBIs. The Panthers are hitting only .218 as a team, with no home runs all season.
Rappahannock played Clarke April 29 (too late for deadlines), plays at Mason May 1, home against SJ-Mount Jackson May 5, at Brentsville May 8, and at Central May 11.
Girls track team
wins first meet
The Rappahannock girls track team won its first meet in at least two years recently, beating out a field of four in an April 8 meet in Fairfax.
Led by first place finishers Jessica Arnold in the mile (6:32), Sherry Shaw in the two-mile (15:47), and the four-by-440 relay team, the Panthers racked up 59 points to win by two.
The final score: Rappahannock 59, Manassas Park 57, George Mason 55, Model School 40.
The boys came in second, as the score was George Mason 84, Rappahannock 55, Manassas Park 48 and Model School 46.
Jamie Finchum won the discus, and senior co-captain Ryan Welch took first in three events: the triple jump, high jump and long jump.
Jason Waters took the two-mile with a time of 11:13.
