The Rappahannock High softball team is poised to enter the four-team Bull Run District tournament, probably as one of the two top seeds, after running up a 9-0 district record (11-0 overall) with only four games left to play.
The Lady Panthers continued to rely on a well-balanced offense and impenetrable pitching by Susan Payne in winning two away games, 9-7 at Page County April 15 and 11-7 at Manassas Park April 24.
Against Page, Rappahannock was down by two runs going into the top of the seventh and final inning, when they scored four runs. Payne retired the side in the bottom half of the stanza, preserving the Panthers’ 10th win of the year.
All-district player Sherron Boddie went 3-for-4, and Lori Paratore had( a two-RBI triple to lead the team. Payne had six strike-outs and only three walks.
Rappahannock again found itself behind against Manassas Park, shut out until the fourth inning. “We hadn’t practiced or played in a week, and it showed,” said Coach Renee Leake. “We were real flat.”
