(1967)—David L. (Z£ke) Ferguson’s great Leeds Don galloped away to a 25-length victory in a chilling rain to become the only horse in Gold Cup history to win the 4-mile test three years in a row and retire the Challenge Trophy. He was one of five horses ridden to decisive wins that day by all-time leading Gold Cup rider, Joe Aitcheson.

Driving rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the spectators as Mr. and Mrs. David L. Ferguson’s Leeds Don galloped to victory and permanent possession of the famed Virginia Gold Cup trophy Saturday. May 6, over the four-mile timber course at Broadview.
For the first time since the inception of the Gold Cup race, the same horse has won the grueling contest for three consecutive years, a triumph for both horse and trainer A. Ridgely White of Middle burg. After his winning effort Leeds Don will be retiredfor the rest of the year.
