A rousing pageant of horses representing 12 breeds will delight Gold Cup visitors at 12:25 p.m. Presented by the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum, the Parade of Breeds will capture the beauty and grace as well inform viewers of the dynamic roles horses have played in the cultures of the Americas.
The parade will feature a variety of breeds including an andalusian, a Peruvian paso fino, a powerful clydesdale and the everpopular quarter horse. Additionally, each rider will wear ceremonial attire or traditional riding apparel.
Upperville’s Lysa Burke Horkan, a successful show rider, will sing the National Anthem at the opening ceremonies, beginning at 1:15p.m.
At 1:20 p.m., riders are up for first race, with post time at 1:30 p.m.
All of the pomp and circumstance lends itself to the day of first-class hunt racing.The featured event is, of course, the $40,000 Virginia Gold Cup timber stakes race of four miles over the challenging Gold Cup timber course.
In its 69th running, the Gold Cup has enjoyed five different homes. Initially run at the Oakwood course, the race moved to Broadview, then to Clovercroft, back to Broadview, and finally to Great Meadow.
