During msyor Deague action me first week of the season, the Pirates squeaked by the Astros 7-6 and the Orioles beat the Senators, 12-7.
The Pirates’ Ricky Butler hurled 14 strike-outs in 4 2/3 innings and Steven Honde stole home for the winning run in what had been a pitching duel. The Astros’ Andy Sneads threw 15 K’s in six innings and Sean O’Neil got one hit.
In the other game, the Senators’ Lars Lyman had two home runs and the Orioles’ top hitter was Irvin Phillips, who clocked a three-RBI tater. Chad Bolton went the distance on the mound for the win.
In the Minor League, the Cardinals won their first game of the year, handing the Athletics their second loss in as many tries, 15-4. The Cardinals’ Raymond Mulcahy was 4-for4 with a homer and a double, and John Zacherle added another homer and another double, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Mike O’Neil, Edward Martin and Johnathan Deal were the A’s top hitters.
Cardinals pitcher Toby Wildman held the Athletics to two hits and struck out seven before being relieved by Michael Kocenski.
