The Board of Supervisors again voted to ban sludge following a public hearing last Wednesday, but the vote was closer, 3 to 2.
The supervisors took up an amendment to the zoning ordinance to ban the land application of sludge after the Planning Commission had voted 4 to 2 to recommend the amendment be adopted.
The supervisors voted 4 to 1 earlier this summer to ban sludge. That required that an amendment be drawn up and presented to the Planning Commission. Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham joined the majority in the earlier vote, but joined Chairman Hubert Gilkey in voting against the amendment last week.
The debate in the public hearing followed the pattern set in previous hearings on the subject. Supporters of the land application of sludge argued that there is no evidence that sludge is unsafe, and it is arbitrary
