This year there were 14 new students being home schooled and another 10 students who continued in home schooling. However, seven students returned to public school from home schooling. The net result of all of that is there are seven more students in home schooling this year than last. Also two students who had been in private school are being home schooled this year, Dr. Gangel reported.
Also this year nine more students were granted religious exemption from attendance, and three students who had been in private schools received religious exemptions. In addition 16 students transferred from the public schools to private schools while seven transferred into the public schools from private schools for a net loss of nine to private schools. Ten students are in private kindergarten programs.
Diane Wood, who has been home schooling her sons for five years talked to the board about the concerns of home-schooling parents. She said she was talking for herself only, but several other home schooling parents were present and shared her concerns.
