On VMI, Mr. Katzen said, “I’d like to see VMI keep the tradition it’s had. There is value in the VMI experience; it has served Virginia well.” He said he believes a compromise can be worked out, and he would favor developing a parallel program for woman students, perhaps at Virginia Tech.
On monies owed to federal retirees for taxes paid on pensions, Mr. Katzen said he favored proposals being worked out by Republicans to offer them stretched out tax credits or tax free bonds.
Mr. Katzen criticises the Democratic administration for cutting state aid to higher education, forcing tuition at state colleges and universities up. He also favors spending more money to build prisons, but he said tax increases won’t be needed because under a Republican administration a “line by line” review of state spending and regulation will uncover ways to reduce current spending and mandates.
He said one of the first things a Republican administration would do is eliminate funds for a new office building in Richmond to house the state lottery.
