Napolitan also said that the aircraft, tail number N-2207B, had been inspected within the past 100 hours of flying time.
Napolitan said that the plane appeared to clip a tree and hit the ground three times before striking the electric pole and bursting into flames.
The crash, which split the pole and knocked down an electrical transformer, caused an eight-hour power outage to over 500 homes, according to a Virginia Power spokesman.
Napolitan said it may take six months to a year before the NTSB determines a cause for the fatal mishap. An inspection of the aircraft’s engine is scheduled for Sept. 15 at the Don Aeronautics facility in Wilmington, Del.
“We’re still gathering information ourselves,” Napolitan said of the investigation.
