Against Luray Leah Marlett got 11 points and 15 rebounds in spite of only playing 15 minutes because she was in foul trouble early on. Coach Gary Leake said one of the keys to the game was play from the bench, since four of the starters had four fouls each. He was particularly pleased with the contributions of Susan Jewell, Laura McNear, and Patti Atkins. “They rescued our starters with their play from the bench,” he said. All along Coach Leake has said that one of Rappahannock’s strengths this year is depth. In the Luray game both teams were in foul trouble, but Rappahannock’s greater depth won out.
“Bonnie Jewell had one of her best games,” Coach Leake said, with 9 points and 9 rebounds. Cari Kerr and Deitrich Beaver had 5 points each.
He said he looks at 20 areas in analyzing each game, and with each game the team looks better. He is concerned that the team is still having problems with turnovers and feels some of the girls have to have more practice with the offenses.
The JV lost to Luray 15-19 after losing to Central 11 to 45 and to Page 13 to 33. JV Coach Emily Wingate said that teamwork is coming together, but the girls still have some tendency to play as five individuals. “They’re coming together; I can see a great deal of improvement,” she said.
