than ideal, but has been consistently seen with horses from sludged pastures, even when the nutritional status is good. When these same horses are removed from sludged pastures and provided with nutrients to detoxify tj?em, their coats shine and do not bleach out significantly anymore. This indicates to me that they have become healthier than when they were on the sludged pastures.
There have been»many reports of heavy metals in sludge and the toxic effects of heavy metals are well documented. Photographic chemicals are a source of silver, lead comes from pipes and is present in many municipal water supplies as was documented in a recent study, and cadmium is a byproduct of some industrial processes. It is because of the toxic level of both the heavy metals and the chemicals mentioned above that many places around the country do not allow sludge to be used on the field. I for one do not want to eat food grown on sludged fields, have the river behind my house contaminated with run-off, or smell the odor that I experience for months when driving by fields in Fauquier and Loudoun counties that have been covered with sludge.
