Mrs. Wood said she had asked to address the board because of her anger when she was told she could not rent a math book for her oldest son. She said teachers in the elementary school had always treated her and her children well, but “I haven't felt that way at the administrative level and higher up. I felt like a door was shut in my face.”
She said she was pleased that the school system is doing a survey of home schoolers and others who have taken their children out of the public schools to find out how the schools could better meet the needs of the community. She said she took her oldest son out of kindergarten to give him more individual attention than he could get in a crowded kindergarten and because she had a “different philosophy of teaching.”
