By DIANA BIRD Rappahannock Neva Contributing Writer The Battle of New Market came to life last Friday as Douglas Baumgardner recounted the details of this Civil War battle to kick off the Friday at the Library series. Mr. Baumgardner made us see the importance of the Shenandoah Valley in the strategies of both the Confederate and the Union armies, and emphasized the role of the Virginia Military Institute and its Cadet Corps. At the Battle of New Market the students from VMI, after marching for three days to the battle site, participated as a group in a victorious engagement for the Confederate forces. Ten of them were killed, including Thomas Jefferson’s descended who was named for him. Two video films about the war documented the career of Stonewall Jackson and VMI’s part in the New Market engagement. Mr. Baumgardner’s researches into the history of. the war produced an account of a woman who witnessed the fighting and helped to nurse and comfort the
